Description: This is a 15-16 week summer employment opportunity funded by The Quetico Foundation to provide post secondary students in a natural resource or environmental sciences related program with an opportunity to gain valuable experience in their chosen field. The Program supports the Foundation’s research objective to further our understanding of wilderness ecology. The four member Summer Student Research Program team collect field data in the remote wilderness of Quetico Provincial Park while canoe tripping for periods of up to 12 days at a time. Team members may also be involved in data entry when off trip. Field work will include ecological monitoring in support of the long term monitoring framework for the Park such as setting up remote data collection devices (song meters, cameras, and temperature loggers), vegetation sampling, broad scale fisheries monitoring, aquatic invertebrate sampling, and fisheries related aquatic system integrity sampling. Additional work may include collection of habitat data and invasive species surveys. Rate of pay will be $12.00-$16.00/hr in accordance with experience and position. Accommodation is available at the Quetico Park Staff House for students not from the local community. Camping gear, food, and supplies while in the field are provided.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

 Presently pursuing post-secondary education at an undergraduate or graduate level, or a recent graduate, in a field sciences or natural resource related program (i.e. biology, environmental studies, forestry, forest conservation, field ecology, resource management)

 Knowledge of field sampling techniques

 Knowledge of the flora and fauna of Ontario, preferably with knowledge of north-western Ontario

 Extensive wilderness survival and outdoor skills and experience including camping, canoe tripping, orienteering and swimming. Associated certifications an asset.

 First Aid/CPR Certifications required. Wilderness First Aid an asset.

 Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

 Knowledge and experience of GIS an asset.

 Ability to work effectively in a small team environment.

 Team leadership position requires experience leading field research teams.
