In the heart of Quetico Park, the legacy of passionate naturalist Shan Walshe continues to inspire young environmental leaders through a bursary established in his honor. Shan’s deep love and understanding of the wilderness resonate with each new generation of students committed to preserving our natural world.

We are thrilled to announce that Dani Duquette is the 2024 recipient of the Shan Walshe Memorial Bursary. Dani’s strong leadership qualities and dedication to environmental stewardship made her an exceptional choice for this prestigious award.

Reflecting on her connection to the area, Dani shared, “Growing up in the Atikokan area, I’ve gotten to spend much of my time in Quetico Provincial Park. From enjoying yearly camping trips with my family and friends; holding my first summer jobs working at the Dawson Trail Pavilion; participating in Northern Lakes K-12 School’s Outers’ Program in grade 11; getting to join my swim coach, Tom Hainey, and swim team last year in the swim across French Lake in memory of Sheila Hainey, to hiking the beautiful trails; Quetico forever has one of the fondest places in my heart. It truly is an honour to be the 2024 recipient of the Quetico Foundation Scholarship, and I have much gratitude for the support of everybody on the Quetico Foundation.”

The Quetico Foundation proudly awards this bursary to outstanding high school students from Atikokan and Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation who are committed to pursuing studies in environmental, biological, or related fields. This award serves not only as financial assistance but also as a testament to the importance of nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards.

Congratulations, Dani! We look forward to seeing the positive impact you will undoubtedly make in the future.
